KASAMA ang coming-of-age drama film na John Denver Trending sa main competition section ng Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). Si Arden Rod Condez, TV writer-turned-director ang nag-direk.
Sinusundan ng “John Denver Trending” ang kuwento ng isang estudyanteng pinagbintangan ng pagnanakaw. Naging biktima siya ng cyberbullying matapos maging viral ang video ng pagiging bayolente niya sa nag-akusa sa kanya.
Para mas lalong i-globalize ang Philippine cinema, pinangunahan ng Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) ang pagsali ng Philippine Delegation sa BIFF ngayong taon matapos nitong pangasiwaan ang Pilipinas bilang Country of Focus noong 2018. Dumalo sa opening ceremonies ng BIFF ang producer na si Sonny Calvento, lead actor na si Janzzen Magpusao, at actress na si Meryll Soriano.

Sa isang Facebook post mula sa official page ng “John Denver Trending,” sinabing pinawalang-bisa ng jury ang rule ng festival na kinakailangang may world premiere status ang pelikula para makapag-compete ito. Ang sabi sa post, “Requiring a world premiere status most of the time, the festival made an exception of allowing our film to compete even if it has already premiered in the Philippines. This is also the first Filipino film to be selected in the section after five years.”
Samantala, sa isang ScreenDaily film review naman, binigyang-diin ang dark reality na kinakaharap ng characters sa panahon ng social media. Ang sabi rito, “As the story darkens towards the fatalistic, we are immersed in easy outrage, fake news and doctored footage that makes one teenager’s plight chime with events in the wider world. The defiance in Soriano’s mother and the anguish of Jansen Magpusao’s demonised, ostracised teenager lend real heartache to a film that speaks to a generation who live by social media.”
Kasama ang “John Denver Trending” sa featured projects sa First Cut International Film Lab na isinagawa ng FDCP noong Abril, isang international project development and editing lab na tumutulong sa pagsasaayos ng feature fiction films sa editing stage.
Nag-uwi ang pelikula ng anim na awards noong ika-15 na Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival noong Agosto, kabilang na rito ang best film at best actor para sa award-winning performance ni Magpusao.
Ang ika- 24 na Busan International Film Festival ay ginanap noong Oktubre 3 hanggang 12, 2019.
