PINAKAMALAKING sektor noong 2018 ang sektor ng paglalakbay at turismo, na may 24.7 porsiyentong bahagi sa gross domestic product ng bansa, ayon sa pag-aaral ng isang global body na kumakatawan sa pribadong sektor ng pagbibiyahe at turismo.

“Travel & Tourism’s contribution to employment during 2018 was 26.4 percent, ahead of both Retail and Construction, at 20.4 percent and 15.7 percent respectively, and only just behind Agriculture (31.1 percent),” ayon sa ulat ng World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) noong Setyembre 5 na inilabas noong Sabado, at isinipi ang kanilang sariling “benchmark” na research.

“The report, sponsored by American Express, reveals that in the Philippines, of the sectors studied, Travel & Tourism is the largest sector in terms of GDP contribution, making up almost a quarter of country’s total GDP, ahead of Financial services (15.4 percent), Agriculture (14.8 percent) and Retail (14.8 percent),” dagdag pa nito.

Noong 2018, nakapag-ambag ang sektor ng $82 bilyon sa ekonomiya ng bansa, ayon sa pag-aaral.

“The industry has experienced incredible growth over the last nine years and WTTC commends the Philippines government for recognizing the importance of Travel & Tourism as a driver of economic growth and for their strategy in spreading the benefits of the industry across the country,” pahayag ni Gloria Guevara, presidente at CEO ng WTTC.

Ikinukumpara ng “benchmarking” research mula sa WTTC ang epekto sa ekonomiya ng industriya sa walong pangunahing sektor tulad ng agrikultura, pagmimina, kalusugan, paggawa ng sasakyan, retail, financial services, banking, at construction, sa 26 na bansa sa10 rehiyon sa mundo.

Ayon sa WTTC, ang sektor na ito ay halos 10.4% o nasa $8.8 trilyon ng kabuuang GDP ng mundo noong 2018.

Sa mas malawak na pagkukumpara, ang kontribusyon ng pagbibiyahe at turismo sa global GDP ay 1.4 beses na mas mataas kaysa agrikultura (7.7 %), 1.5 beses na mas mataas kesa banking (7.1%) at automotive manufacturing (6.8%), at 1.7 beses na mas mataas kesa pagmimina (6.0 %).

Ang pagbibiyahe at turismo ang “fastest-growing sector in 2018,” na tumaas ng 3.9%, naungusan ang automotive manufacturing (3.7%) at kalusugan (3.3 %), at mas mataas kumpara sa global economy growth rate (3.2%) para sa ikawalong sunod na taon.

Ayon sa WTTC, ang dahilan nito ay ang patuloy na pagtaas ng bilang ng middle-class households, matibay na paglago sa global consumer spending, mababang bilang ng walang trabaho, patuloy na pagbawi mula sa security threats, pagbaba ng halaga ng pera at paluwag ng pagbibigay ng visa sa ilang mga bansa sa buong mundo.
