PINAGHARIAN ni Filipino Romie Lord Guerra ang katatapos na New Zealand Major Open Chess Championship na tinampukang 126th New Zealand Chess Congress na ginanap nitong Enero 14 hanggang 24, 2019 sa Waipuna Hotel and Conference Center sa Auckland, New Zealand.

Ang 30-years-old Guerra na tubong Marikina Heights, Marikina City ay naka kolekta ng 7.5 points mula sa seven wins, one draw at loss para magkampeon sa nine-round tournament.

"I’m still speechless and I still couldn’t believe it. What a way to close 2018’s door and what a great start for me this 2019!" sabi ni Guerra, isang Business Management graduate student mula Adamson University sa gabay ni coach Christopher Rodriguez.

Dahil sa natamong tagumpay ay napataas ni Guerra ang moral ng bansa ayon kay Auckland, New Zealand based Jun Isaac.

 “Once again our flag has been raised in this foreign land after knowing that our Filipino kababayan Romie Lord Guerra won the New Zealand Major Open Chess Championship ,” ani Isaac, nakatatandang kapatid ni dating PBA player Leo Isaac.

Naitala ni Guerra ang importanteng panalo kontra kina Aaron Ziwen Wang ng New Zealand sa  first round, Karl Holdo ng New Zealand sa second round, Candidate Master Timothy Rains ng New Zealand sa third round, David Lovejoy ng Australia sa fourth round, Michael D. Sole ng New Zealand sa seventh round, Candidate Master Don Eade ng New Zealand sa eight round at Oliver Dai ng New Zealand sa ninth at final round.

Tabla naman siya kay Fide Master Robert E. Gibbons ng New Zealand sa fifth round subalit natalo naman kay  Candidate Master Stanley Yee ng New Zealand sa sixth round.

Si Guerra na miyembro din ng Philippine Executive Chess Association (PECA) ang nanguna sa top 1900 below sa New Zealand Rapid (6.5 pts./9) at tumapos naman ng ika-2 puwesto sa New Zealand Lightning (7.5 pts./9).

Naibulsa ni Guerra ang 700nzd sa paghahari sa NZ Major Open, tumangap naman ng 50nzd matapos manguna sa 1900 below sa NZ Rapid at naiuwi ang 200nzd matapos ang runner-up place sa NZ Lightning.
