Naniniwala si Pangulong Duterte na mapahuhusay pa ang military at defense cooperation sa pagitan ng Pilipinas at ng China.
Ito ang pahayag ni Duterte sa simula ng bilateral meeting nila ni Chinese Pres. Xi Jinping sa Hainan, China, nitong Martes ng gabi.
Ayon sa Pangulo, mapapaigting ang kooperasyon sa pamamagitan ng nilagdaang Memorandum of Understanding on Defense Cooperation noong 2004.

Sa ngayon ay walang joint military agreement ang Pilipinas at ang China, gaya ng Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) sa Estados Unidos.
Kasabay nito, pinasalamatan ni Duterte si Xi sa ibinigay na military assistance ng China noong kasagsagan ng opensiba laban sa mga terorista na sumukob sa Marawi City noong nakaraang taon.
Ibinida niya na ang nakapatay sa leader ng mga terorista, na si Isnilon Hapilon, ay isang riple na mula sa China.
“China and the Philippines can do more to boost military and defense cooperation under the framework of the 2004 Memorandum of Understanding on Defense Cooperation. I’d like to say it in a very short way — we are with you in this and we would like to thank again for the military assistance you gave us. It spelled the difference between victory and defeat, at least on a shorter term, that we are able to put down the terroristic activities that have perpetuated in Marawi,” ani Duterte.
