Nakababahala ang unang estadistikang pangkalusugan na inilabas tungkol sa mga overseas Filipino worker (OFW).
Ayon kay ACTS-OFW Party-list Rep. Aniceto “John” Bertiz III, may kabuuang 5,537 OFW ang nagpositibo sa HIV o mayroon nang full-blown AIDS, at binubuo ang 11 porsiyento ng 52,280 kasong naitala ng Department of Health (DoH)- National HIV/AIDS Registry hanggang noong Pebrero 28, 2018.
Karamihan din sa nasabing bilang ay nasa katanghalian ang edad.

“This is very unfortunate, because if we look at the median age of these OFWs – at 32 to 34 years old – they are actually at the top of their lives in terms of potential workforce productivity,” sabi ni Bertiz.
Tinukoy ang r e g i s t r y statistics, sinabi ni Bertiz na simula Enero hanggang Pebrero lamang ngayong taon ay mayroon nang 140 OFW – 129 ang lalaki at 11 ang babae – ang nagpositibo sa human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Ang HIV ay precursor sa nakamamatay at wala pa ring lunas na acquired immune defeciency syndrome (AIDS).
“Almost all of the OFWs in the registry acquired the infection via sexual contact,” anang kongresista.
Binigyang-diin ng problema a n g p a n g a n g a i l a n g a n g pagtuunan ng Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) ang kamulatan sa HIV/AIDS sa lahat ng manggagawa, partikular sa mga OFW, ayon kay Bertiz.
“Awareness and prevention are our best tools against infection,” aniya.
Sinabi ni Bertiz na mas malaki ang panganib ng mga OFW sa HIV infection dahil lantad sila sa kulturang dayuhan na karaniwan nang nagsusulong ng high-risk behavior, tulad ng casual sex, partikular ang mga seaman.
“And they have the money to pay for readily available commercial or transactional sex services in foreign ports,” paliwanag ni Bertiz.
Sa 5,537 OFW na nagpositibo sa HIV/AIDS registry ng DoH, sinabi ni Bertiz na 86 na porsiyento ng mga ito ay lalaki.
“Of the 52,280 cases in the registry, there have been 2,511 deaths reported so far. And in 2017 alone, an average of 41 Filipinos (not necessarily OFWs) died every month due to HIV/ AIDS or difficulties thereof,” sabi pa ni Bertiz.
