WALANG nakikitang paglabag sa International Olympic Committee (IOC) ang naging desisyon ng Pasig Regional Trial Court na ‘null and void’ ang nakalipas na eleksyon sa Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) gayundin ang ipinag-utos na magsagawa ng bagong halalan sa Febrero 23.

Ipinaalala rin ni IOC Deputy Secretary General Pere Miro sa sulat na may petsang Pebrero 9 bilang tugon sa report na ipinadala ni POC president Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco nitong Pebrero 5, na ang suliranin ng POC sa kasalukuyan ay mareresolba ng General Assembly – na aniya’y pinakamakapangyarihan sa organisyon ng isang NOC (National Olympic Committee)

“Now, as we understand that there is an ongoing court case and an obvious need to discuss, clarify and agree upon the practical implications and the next steps, in this context, we recommend that you refere the present situation to your NOC General Assembly and request that the General Assembly take all appropriate decision,” ayon sa sulat ni Miro.

“NOC General Assembly as the supreme decision-making body of the NOC.”

Bunsod ng sulat ni Miro, wala nang dahilan para pigilan ang kautusan ng korte, sa kabila ng nakabinbin na apela ni Cojuangco sa Court of Appeals, na nauna nang nagbasura sa hininging TRO (Temporary Restraining Order) ng POC.

Kasunod nito, naglabas ng memorandum si POC secretary general Steve Hontiveros para sa gaganaping ‘extra ordinary general assembly’ meeting sa Pebrero 19 sa Wack Wack Golf and Country Club.

Mauna rito, magsasagawa muna ng executive board meeting ang POC sa Pebrero 15.

“Wala nang magagawa si Cong. Peping. Nagdesisyon na ang IOC at walang nakikitang problema para sa eleksyon,” pahayag ni Ed Picson, segretary general ng Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines (ABAP)

Ang pangulo ng Abap na si Ricky Vargas ang mahigpit na karibal ni Cojuangco sa panguluhan.

Dalawa lamang ang agenda sa extraordinary general assembly. Ang “status of appealed case on the eligibility of candidates for election as POC president” at ang sulat ni Miro.

Sa ginanap na POC election sa nakalipas na taon, hindi pinayagan si Vargas na tumakbo dahil hindi umano siya “active member.” Ito ang isyu na dinala niya sa RTC na nagbigay naman sa kanya ng pabor.

“I am happy that the POC finally decided to follow the rule of law and the voice of reason,” pahayag ni Vargas sa media statement. “And the IOC should be commended for their straightforward appreciation of the situation. I now look forward to an orderly and fair election hopefully leading to the improvement of our athletes’ lives and Philippine sports in general.”
