May inilaan na P6.58 bilyong pondo para sa Mindanao Railway Project (MRP), sinabi kahapon ni Surigao del Sur 2nd district Rep. Johnny Pimentel.
Ayon kay Pimentel, miyembro ng House Appropriations Committee, ang nasabing halaga ay kabilang sa mga item sa Rail Infrastructure Program ng Department of Transportation (DoTr) sa panukalang P3.767-trillion 2018 national budget.
Inilarawan niya ang MRP na “an enormous project that will require a lot of incremental funding and take several years to complete by phases.”

“What is important is that the project is finally taking off, and not just being kicked around anymore,” sabi ni Pimentel, miyembro rin ng Transportation Committee.
Tutustusan ng P6.58 bilyon ang Phase 1 ng MRP—pagdudugtungin ng 105-kilometrong linya ng provincial capital ng Davao del Norte, Tagum City, padaan sa Davao City, hanggang sa provincial capital ng Davao del Sur, Digos City.
Sinabi ni Pimentel na kalaunan ay palalawigin ang riles at dadaan sa Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos, Iligan, Surigao at Zamboanga.
Aabot sa 2,000 kilometro ang sasakupin ng MRP, at aabot ng hanggang P120 bilyon para makumpleto—ang Phase 1 pa lamang nito ay gagastusan ng P36 bilyon.
“I hope that the train service will be capable of ferrying not just people but cargo as well as the island is an agriculture powerhouse producing, by last count, at least P500 billion worth of farm products a year,” pahayag ni Senador Sonny Angara.
