Sinabi ng Australia kahapon na magpapadala ito ng dalawang military surveillance aircraft para tulungan ang mga sundalo ng Pilipinas sa paglaban sa Maute Group, at mabawi ang Marawi City sa mga militanteng Islamist.
“The Government of the Philippines has accepted an Australian offer of two Australian Defense Force AP-3C Orion aircraft to provide surveillance support to the Armed Forces of the Philippines,” saad sa email mula kay Australian Defense Minister Marise Payne.
“The regional threat from terrorism, in particular from Daesh and foreign fighters, is a direct threat to Australia and our interests,” aniya sa pahayag, na ang tinutukoy ay ang Islamic State gamit ang Arab acronym ng grupo.

Kamakailan ay nakausap ni Payne si Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana at tinanong kung paano makatutulong ang Australia sa paglaban ng Pilipinas sa mga militante.
“We agreed the best way to defeat terrorism in our region is for us to work together,” ani Payne. Hindi siya nagbigay ng detalye kung saan itatalaga ang mga sasakyang panghimpapawid ng Australia.
Mayroong malawalak na Defence Cooperation Program ang Australia at Pilipinas, na sumasaklaw sa counter terrorism cooperation.
Ikinalugod naman ng Armed Forces of the Philippines ang alok na tulong ng Australia.
Sinabi ni Gen. Gilbert Gapay, deputy commander ng Eastern Mindanao Command, sa Mindanao Hour sa Davao City, na malaking tulong ang nasabing mga spy plane hindi lamang sa operasyon sa Marawi City kundi sa iba pang bahagi ng Mindanao.
Pero nilinaw ni Gapay na hindi pa niya alam kung kailan darating ang mga nasabing aircraft.
“Okay. In every military operation, the intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance capability is very important. So having these capabilities, it could be used in any military operation, not just Marawi, but of course in all other operations in Mindanao,” ani Gapay.
Unang nagpadala ang United States ng mga tropa malapit sa Marawi, ngunit hindi sila sumasabak sa labanan doon, at nagkaloob din ng P-3 surveillance plane para tulungan ang Pilipinas sa digmaan.
