OPISYAL na ilulunsad ng Department of Information and Communications Technology, kaisa ang National Telecommunications Commmission, ngayong Araw ng Kalayaan, Hunyo 12, ang libreng Wi-Fi at mabilis na serbisyo ng Internet sa buong EDSA, sa proyekto na tinaguriang "Alay Para sa Malayang Pilipino."

Ang libreng Wi-Fi ay isa sa mga ipinangako ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte sa una niyang State of the Nation Address (SONA) noong Hulyo 2016.

“I have ordered the newly-created Department of Information and Communications Technology to develop a National Broadband Plan to accelerate the deployment of fiber optic cables and wireless technologies to improve Internet speed,” sabi ni Pangulong Duterte.

Inatasan din ng Punong Ehekutibo ang Department of Information and Communications Technology “to provide Wi-Fi access in selected public places throughout the country.”

Upang maisakatuparan ang proyekto sa EDSA, gumamit ang Department of Information and Communications Technology ng mga estratehiya na kinabibilangan ng paglalaan ng mga access point sa lahat ng istasyon sa MRT at sa pagitan ng mga ito at mapabuti ang mga istruktura para sa cellular services sa EDSA.

Isinagawa nitong Sabado ang testing sa proyekto, na prioridad na maserbisyuhan ang bahaging mula sa Cubao hanggang sa Guadalupe.

Katuwang ng Department of Information and Communications Technology sa proyektong ito ang Department of Transportation-Metro Rail Transit 3, PLDT at SMART, Globe Telecom, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, Philippine Reclamation Authority, Manila Electric Company, Department of Public Works and Highways, Light Rail Transit Authority, at ang mga lokal na pamahalaan ng Quezon City, Makati City, Mandaluyong City at Pasay City.
