Hinimok ng isang miyembro ng United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee si U.S. President Donald Trump na bawiin ang imbitasyon na bumisita sa White House si President Rodrigo Duterte dahil diumano sa “barbaric actions” nito.
Sa pahayag na inilabas nitong linggo, sinabi ni US Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) na siya ay “deeply disturbed” sa “cavalier invitation” ni President Trump kay President Duterte na inilarawan niyang “a man who has boasted publicly about killing his own citizens.”
“The United States is unique in the world because our values – respect for human rights, respect for the rule of law -- are our interests,” pahayag ni Sen. Cardin. “Ignoring human rights will not advance US interests in the Philippines or any place else.”
Ayon sa Democratic senator, bibihira mang banggitin o isulong ni Trump ang “values that make America exceptional” ngunit ito mismo ang gagawin niya at ng kanyang mga kasama sa Senate gaya ni Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio.

Itataguyod nila ang bipartisan legislation “to make it clear to President Duterte that there will be consequences for his barbaric actions.”
Kabilang sa panukalang batas na pigilin ang pagbebenta ng ilang armas ng US sa Philippine National Police (PNP) at suportahan ang human rights at civil society organizations sa Pilipinas.
Inimbitahan ni Trump si Duterte na bumisita sa Washington sa pag-uusap nila sa telepono nitong weekend.
Sinabi ni Duterte na hindi pa siya nakakapagdesisyon kung tatanggapin ang imbitasyon ni Trump.
