KINORONAHANG Miss Universe Philippines ang 25-anyos na Filipino-British event organizer sa 54th Binibining Pilipinas beauty pageant na ginanap sa Smart Araneta Coliseum sa Cubao, Quezon City kahapon ng madaling araw.

Tinalo ng crowd favorite na si Rachel Peters ang 39 na iba pang mga kandidata para sa coveted title sa limang oras na palabas na nagsimula sa gabi ng Abril 30 at nagtapos sa madaling araw ng Mayo 1.

Pinahanga ni Rachel ang panel of judges sa pagsagot niya sa katanungan ni European Union Ambassador to the Philippines Franz Jessen na: “This week, the Philippines hosted the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Summit. If you were invited to speak, what would have been your message to the leaders?”

Ang sagot ni Rachel: “I believe that one of the biggest problems of our country is divisiveness: in politics, religion, and culture. I believe it is same across the world and that is something I would like to address. If we can learn to tolerate each other’s differences and respect each other, then we will be a stronger nation going forward.”

Tumanggap din ang 5’9” beauty queen ng tatlong major special awards -- Best in Swimsuit, Jag Denim Queen, at The Face of Binibini (Miss Photogenic).

Bilang events organizer, nakatrabaho ni Peters ang mga sikat na foreign artists kabilang sina Katy Perry at Christina Aguilera. Mahilig din siya sa aso.

Sinanay at hinubog si Rachel Peters ng Kagandahang Flores beauty camp sa ilalim ni Rodgil Flores. Siya ay kasintahan ni Governor Miguel Luis “Migz” Villafuerte ng Camarines Sur.

Nagtapos siya ng International Baccalaureate sa British School sa Phuket, Thailand. Mayroon siyang Bachelor of Business, Tourism and Events major mula sa La Trobe University sa Australia.

Sinabi rin ni Rachel sa pamamagitan ng Instagram na opisyal siyang naging Pilipina noong Nobyembre 4, 2015, sa post na hawak niya ang kanyang Philippine passport na nilagyan niya ng caption na: “Salamat po dfa. Officially a Filipina today!!! Yewww.”

Ang iba pang winners ay sina: Mariel de Leon, Bb Pilipinas International; Chanel Olive Thomas, Bb Pilipinas Supranational; Katarina Rodriguez, Bb. Pilipinas Intercontinental; Elizabeth Clenci, Bb. Pilipinas Grand International at Nelda Ibe, Bb. Pilipinas Globe.

Naging first runner-up naman si Charmaine Elima at si Kristel Guelos ang second runner-up.

Tumanggap din ng special awards sina Thomas bilang Miss Friendship at Best in National Costume; De Leon, Miss Cream Silk at Best in Evening Gown; Rodriguez, Bb. Philippine Airlines; at si Dane Felisse Marasigan, Bb. Talent.

Ipinakilala rin ng prestihiyosong beauty pageant ang bagong format sa show. Mula sa 40, ibinaba ang bilang ng mga kandidata sa 25 sa pagrampa nila sa evening gown at swimsuit. Ang mga kandidatang nakakuha ng pinakamatataas na score ang tumuloy sa Top 15.

Si Juliana Kapeundl, 25, ng Batangas, ang nanalo ng People’s Choice award via online voting na itinaguyod ng Smart Philippines. Pumasok din siya sa Top 15.

Ang Manila Bulletin Readers’ Choice ngayong taon ay si Christagale Borja mula sa Western Samar.

Nagtapos si Borja, 26, na may First Class Honors sa St. Mary’s University sa London. Nagtrabaho siya bilang fashion merchandiser ng isang top fashion boutique bago nagpursige sa pagsali sa beauty pageants.

Nagdiwang pamilya at kasintahan ni Rachel Peters nang ihayag ang pangalan ng Camarines Sur beauty queen bilang top winner ng gabi.

“I am very happy for Rachel. She represented all the Bicolanos here tonight. I know what she’s gone through the past three months for the Bb. Pilipinas regimen. Congratulations CamSur! Congratulations kay Rachel!” sabi ni Gov. Villafuerte.

Sinabi ng 28-anyos na pulitiko na suportado niya ang pagsali ni Rachel sa pageant. “Very supportive naman ako sa kanya. Tumutulong ako sa kanya kung saan p’wede.”

Nang tanungin tungkol sa winning qualities ng girlfiend, sinabi ni Migz na: “I think she’s a total package - beauty, brains, the body. Sa tingin ko sa tulong ng buong Pilipinas, ang Miss Universe kaya natin ‘yan.”

“I am overwhelmed! I am overjoyed! I am so proud of Rachel,” sabi naman ni Nigel, ama ni Rachel, na dumating at dumalo rin sa pageant night kasama ang asawa. “I used to live here for 10 years but her brother (Daniel) stays with her in the Philippines.”

Sinabi ni Nigel na lumipad ang kanyang pamilya mula Thailand para suportahan ang kanyang anak.

Tulad ni Rachel, si Nigel ay isa ring concert promoter. Sinabi niya na nakapag-promote siya ng maraming concert sa Pilipinas. “We have a company named Midas Promotions.”

Ang Midas Promotions ang nagdala ng concerts nina Bryan Adams, The Moffats, David Guetta, Simple Plan, Pentatonix, Charlie Puth, Selena Gomez, Engelbert Humperdinck, at marami pang iba sa Pilipinas at sa iba’t iba pang bansa.

“She’s beautiful! She has a great education. Her Q&A was very good,” sabi ni Nigel nang hingan ng komento sa performance ng kanyang anak sa pageant.

BATTLE OF BEAUTY CAMPS

Inamin ni Flores na paligsahan pa rin ng mga beauty camp ang prestigious pageants gaya ng Binibining Pilipinas.

“Until the results were out, I was really very nervous. We will have a celebration at the camp. Win or lose it’s for the girls,” aniya.

Tungkol naman kay Rachel, sinabi ni Flores na: “No. 1, she is so determined. No. 2, she always seeks advice. I am so happy with the results. We have second runner-up. We have Miss Globe, Miss Grand International and Miss Universe.”
