Umapela ang Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) sa mamamayan na ginagamit ang Bibliya para depensahan ang parusang kamatayan na unawaing mabuti ang Kasulatan.
Sa pastoral letter na inilabas kahapon, sinabi ni CBCP president Lingayen Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas na kailanman ay hindi isinulong ni Jesus ang anumang uri ng “legal killing”.
“To the people who use the Bible to defend death penalty, need we point out how many other crimes against humanity have been justified, using the same Bible? We humbly enjoin them to interpret the Scriptures properly, to read them as a progressive revelation of God’s will to humankind, with its ultimate fulfilment in Jesus Christ, God’s definitive Word to the world,” saad ni Villegas.
Kahit na mabuti pa ang layunin, idiniin ng pinuno ng CBCP na ang parusang kamatayan ay hindi napatunayang epektibo para supilin ang krimen.

Hiniling ng CBCP sa mga mananampalataya na ipagdasal ang mga mambabatas ng bansa sa paghahanda ng Senado na pagbotohan ang death penalty.
