Hinikayat ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte ang mga Pilipino na tularan ang mga katangian ng pambansang bayaning si Dr. Jose Rizal upang magapi ang kasalukuyang kalaban ng bansa: ang kahirapan, krimen, ilegal na droga, at katiwalian.
Ito ang panawagan ni Pangulong Duterte sa paggunita ng bansa sa pagkamartir ni Rizal nitong Biyernes, Disyembre 30.
Sa kanyang mensahe sa pagdiriwang ng Rizal Day, sinabi ng Pangulo na mapalad ang mga Pilipino na tumanggap ng mga bunga ng pagsasakripisyo ni Rizal, “the freedom that he fought for, and the self-identity and honor that he strongly believed we ought to defend.”
Sinabi ni Duterte na dapat na handang magpakabayani ang mga Pilipino gaya ni Rizal, at labanan ang “modern invaders” tulad ng kahirapan, lawlessness, drug addiction at katiwalian sa gobyerno.
