NANGAKO ang Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-Region 7 na paiigtingin ang pagsisikap ng kagawaran para maprotektahan ang Tañon Strait Protected Seascape (TSPS), ang pinakamalaking protektadong lugar sa bansa, makaraang makatanggap ito kamakailan ng karagdagang dalawang patrol boat.
Pinangunahan ni DENR-7 OIC Regional Director Emma E. Melana at mga partner mula sa Therma Visayas, Inc. (TVI), sa pangunguna ni CSR Manager Edgardo Nicolas, ang pag-turnover sa dalawang 20-footer patrol boat na may 15-horsepower outboard engines, na ginanap sa TSPS Station sa Barangay Malhiao, Badian, Cebu.
Sa isinagawang turnover, inihayag ni Melana na malaki ang maitutulong ng dalawang patrol boat para lalong mapagtibay ang pagpapatupad ng batas sa territorial water ng TSPS.
“The strait is the largest marine protected area in the Philippines which nurtures a highly diverse marine ecosystem with 26 species of mangroves, seven species of seagrass and more than 18,000 hectares of coral reef. However, with these bountiful benefits that we derive from our Tañon Strait came along the increasing amount of pressure being put on its highly vulnerable ecosystems, thus we need the support from our stakeholders to help us in this challenge, let us protect the TSPS,” saad ni Melana.
Ibinunyag din ng assistant protected area superintendent for TSPS, si Am Prospero Lendio, na nagsagawa ngayong taon ang mga miyembro ng TSPS monitoring group ng serye ng seaborne patrols sa paligid ng protected area, na humantong sa pagkakahuli sa limang ilegal na commercial fishing vessel at nakapagsampa ng kaso laban sa 63 indibiduwal.
“In partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), and other enforcement agencies, we have the Philippine National Police (PNP), Philippine Maritime Police, our partner local government units, we will continue to further strengthen our efforts, especially now that we have more patrol boats, regular patrols will be conducted,” ani Lendio.
Sinabi rin ni Melana sa seremonya na ang natanggap nilang donasyon ay nagsisilbing milestone sa matibay na pagtutulungan sa pagitan ng gobyerno at mga pribadong katuwang nito para higit na mapangalagaan ang kapaligiran at mga likas na yaman.
Sa 2017, hangad ng DENR na mapabuti ang mangrove forest management para matutukan ang rehabilitasyon at pangangalaga rito; makapagdebelop at maipatupad ang mga estratehiya na makakapagpabuti sa waste disposal; paglulunsad ng kampanya saTSPS wide community education at public awareness; at isulong ang plano sa ecotourism bilang susi sa maayos at epektibong pangangasiwa sa TSPS.
