Tiniyak ni Pangulong Rodrigo R. Duterte kay United States President-elect Donald Trump ang mas matatag na relasyon ng Pilipinas sa Amerika, lalo na dahil ang huli “wishes me well in my campaign” laban sa droga.
Inilabas ng Punong Ehekutibo ang pahayag nang makausap niya sa telepono si Trump nitong Biyernes ng gabi, at imbitahan siya ng huli para bumisita sa Amerika.
Tumawag si Duterte kay Trump bandang 10:30 ng gabi (oras sa Pilipinas) upang batiin ang business tycoon sa pagkakapanalo nito sa US presidential elections kamakailan. Tumagal ng pitong minuto ang kanilang pag-uusap.
“I appreciate the response that I got from President-elect Trump and I would like to wish him success. He will be a good president for the United States of America. I am very sure,” sabi ni Duterte.

Sa maikling video clip na kuha kay Duterte habang nakikipag-usap kay Trump sa telepono na inilabas ng Malacañang, maririnig ang president na sinasabi sa incoming US leader na: “We will maintain and enhance the bilateral ties between our two countries.”
Pumait ang relasyon ni Duterte sa Amerika dahil sa mga batikos laban sa kanyang madugong giyera kontra droga. Paulit-ulit na nakatikim sa kanyang maaanghang na salita ang outgoing US president na si Barack Obama at sinabihan pa ito ng “go to hell.”
Pero ngayon, sinabi ni Duterte na nararamdaman niya ang “good rapport” kay Trump, ayon sa transcript na inilabas ng Presidential Communications Office (PCO).
“The President-elect Trump wishes to extend his warmest regards to the Filipino people. And in just a few minutes, we were talking a lot of things,” ani Duterte, at idinagdag na si Trump “(was) quite sensitive also to our worry about drugs.”
“He understood the way we are handling it and I said that there’s nothing wrong in protecting a country. It was a bit very encouraging in the sense that I supposed that what he really wanted to say was that we would be the last to interfere in the affairs of your own country,” ani Duterte.
“He wishes me well in my campaign and he said that… well we are doing it as a sovereign nation, the right way. And he wishes us well. And I said that, well, we assured him of our ties with America,” sabi niya.
Sinabi rin ni Duterte na inimbitahan din siya ni Trump para bumisita sa Amerika—at inimbitahan din niya ito sa ASEAN Summit sa bansa sa 2017. (Elena L. Aben)
