Pinuri at pinasalamatan ng ng Department of Science and Technology (DoST) ang mga Pinoy scientists sa ibayong dagat na umuwi at nagbahagi ng kanilang galing sa science community sa bansa sa pamamagitan ng “Balik Scientist Program” (BSP).
Isa si Dr. Reginald Salonga, dating miyembro ng University of Santo Tomas (UST) Faculty of Pharmacy at ngayon ay researcher sa Mejio University at lecturer sa Nagoya University in Japan, sa mahigit 30 balik scientists na pinarangalan sa 2nd annual BSP Convention na ginanap sa Pasay City kamakailan.
Iprinisinta ni Salonga ang kanyang gawa na tinawag na “The Efficacy of Medicinal Plants on Allergic Contract Dermatitis using Trinitrochlorobenzene (TNCB)-induced Contact Hypersensitivity (CHS) Mouse Model”.
“The traditional and complementary and alternative medicine (TCAM) has been widely used for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of a broad range of diseases. In the Philippines, TCAM is still utilized even though the national health care system is predominantly allopathic,” paliwanag ni Salonga.

Sa pamamagitang ng “Balik Scientist Program” hinihikayat ng DoST ang mga Pinoy scientists na nasa ibang bansa na umuwi at ibahagi ang kanilang kaalaman at kahusayan upang palakasin ang science and technology capabilities ng kanilang local counterparts sa academe, public at private sectors.
“It is worth mentioning that some balik scientists go beyond their engagement in the Philippines as they host students to do their research in their laboratories abroad. This is I think a very generous gesture,” pabatid ni DOST Secretary Fortunato de la Pena sa convention.
May tagline na “Balik Puso, Balik Pilipinas” nililigawan ng BSP ang mga Pilipino scientists sa ibang bansa upang ialay ang kanilang mga ginawa bilang shining testimony sa power of knowledge sharing at sa diwa ng “bayanihan”.
Nagkakaloob ang programa ng financial incentives sa Pinoy scientists sa ibang bansa sa short o long term basis.
“We are encouraging Filipino scientists abroad to return to the Philippines, share their expertise and help the country to move towards progress,” dagdag ni de la Pena. (Martin A. Sadongdong)
