Ito ang tiniyak kahapon ni Principal Deputy Press Secretary Eric Schultz kasunod ang balitang kinansela ng US State Department ang pagbebenta ng 26,000 assault rifles sa Pilipinas.
Sinabi niya na nananatili ang bilateral relationship ng Pilipinas at US, at isinantabi ang mga palagay na pagtigil ng US State Department sa sana’y pagbebenta ng high-powered firearms ay para pangaralan si Pangulong Duterte sa mga banat nito laban sa US.
“What we’ve said generally about President Duterte is that he’s been using some colorful words lately, but that rhetoric does not reflect the longstanding and historic close relationship we have with the Filipino people. And while some of that rhetoric has been colorful and inflammatory, we haven’t received any official requests to change our security, defense, or cooperation with the Philippines,” aniya sa panayam ng US media habang sakay ng Air Force One habang patungo sa Chapel Hill sa North Carolina. Gayunman, sinabi ni Schultz na hindi niya makumpirma ang kanselasyon ng pagbebenta ng 26,000 M4 rifles dahil ito ay sakop ng mga kasamahan niya sa State Department.
“I don’t have a tick-tock to share on that decision. You should check in with my colleagues at the State Department,” aniya.
Sinabi ni outgoing Foreign Affairs spokesman at Ambassador to Malaysia Charles Jose na hinihintay pa nila ang official notification mula sa US government kaugnay sa pagkansela sa pagbili ng assault rifles. (Charissa M. Luci)
