Pinangalanan ni Pope Francis si Monsignor Victor Bendico ng Archdiocese of Capiz bilang bagong obispo ng Diocese of Baguio kapalit ng 77-anyos na si Bishop Carlito Cenzon, na ang pagbibitiw ay tinanggap ng papa.
Ang mandatory retirement age para sa mga obispo ay 70-anyos.
“I am looking forward to serving the people of Baguio and that we will be able to work hand in hand. My appointment came as a big surprise and I accept it with great humility and a deep sense of unworthiness,” sabi ni Bendico sa isang paskil sa Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines News.
Ang 56-anyos na bishop-elect ay naging pari sa Archdiocese of Capiz sa loob ng 32 taon. Siya ang kasalukuyang rector ng Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception sa Roxas City. Anim na beses pa lamang siyang napunta ng Baguio kayat hindi siya pamilyar sa lugar, lengguwahe at kultura dito.

“This is really a big challenge on my part,” ani Bendico. “I would like to thank the Holy Father, Pope Francis, for the trust and confidence he has given me to shepherd the people of Baguio. I also express my gratitude to the faithful and the clergy of the Archdiocese of Capiz for a very fruitful ministry with their support,” dagdag ni Bendico.
Si Benedico ay magsisilbing ikaanim na obispo ng Diocese of Baguio, isa sa pinakamatandang ecclesiastical territories sa bansa. (Christina I. Hermoso)
