Inihayag ng U.S. Department of State noong Miyerkules na magtutungo si Secretary John Kerry sa Manila sa susunod na linggo upang makipagpulong kay Pangulong Rodrigo R. Duterte.
Sa isang email sa media, sinabi ni Mark C. Toner, deputy department spokesperson, na nakatakdang simulan ni Kerry ang dalawang araw na official visit nito sa Hulyo 26. Nakatakda rin siyang makipagpulong sa kanyang katapat na si Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay.
Sinabi ni Toner na tatalakayin ni Kerry ang “full range of our cooperation” sa bagong administrasyon.
Magaganap ang pagbisita ng pinakamataas na diplomat ng United States sa Manila dalawang linggo kasunod ng makasaysayang desisyon ng isang United Nations tribunal na pumapabor sa Pilipinas sa kaso laban sa Beijing kaugnay sa South China Sea (West Philippines Sea).

Bago dumating sa Manila, magtutungo muna si Kerry sa Vientiane, Laos sa Hulyo 25-26 upang makilahok sa ASEAN Regional Forum, East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers Meeting, ASEAN-U.S. Ministerial Meeting, at sa Lower Mekong Initiative Ministerial Meeting.
“At these ASEAN meetings the Secretary will discuss the regions security architecture and shared transnational challenges including maritime security, illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing, the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and the South China Sea,” sabi ni Toner.
Noong Hunyo, sinabi ni John Schaus ng Washington-based think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) na si Kerry ang dapat na maging unang US Cabinet official na makikipagkita kay Duterte upang direktang dinggin ang “objectives” ng Pangulo at muling tiyakin sa kanya na seryoso ang U.S. sa pangako nito sa mutual defense treaty.
Binigyang-diin ni Schaus ang pagpahayag ni Duterte ng seryosong pagkabahala kapwa tungkol sa kasaysayan ng pagkakasangkot ng U.S. sa Pilipinas at sa “credibility of the U.S. treaty commitment to defend his country.”
“The secretary can reinforce the message the United States has delivered to the Philippines throughout the Obama administration, emphasizing the importance of partnership and cooperation to enhance the security of both the Philippines and the region as a whole,” sabi ni Schaus. (ELENA L. ABEN)
