Nagtaas ng kilay ang mga mambabatas kahapon sa ipinangako ni Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte na palalayain niya si dating Pangulo at ngayon ay Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo kung mahahalal siyang pangulo, at ipinaalala sa alkalde na tanging mga korte ang may huling pasya sa kaso ni Arroyo.

Sinabi nina Speaker Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte, Jr. at Marikina Rep. Miro Quimbo na tanging ang Sandiganbayan ang may hurisdiksiyon sa kaso ni Arroyo.

“Anytime, the Sandiganbayan can release her. It’s their call. Later on Duterte can also take over the job of the Ombudsman,” sinabi ni Belmonte, campaign manager ng Koalisyon ng Daang Matuwid ng Liberal Party, sa isang text message makaraang sabihin ni Duterte na dapat nang palayain ang dating Pangulo dahil “weak” ang ebidensiya laban dito.

“While, I personally believe the evidence pertaining to the charge for which she is currently detained is weak, we have to respect the legal system. Our democracy dictates that. It is the courts, not Congress nor the President who can make the decision,” sinabi naman ni Quimbo sa isang panayam.

Sinegundahan naman ni 1-BAP Party-list Rep. Silvestre Bello III, kaalyado ni Arroyo at miyembro ng House minority bloc, na dapat nang palayain si Arroyo, ngunit aminado siyang tanging mga korte ang makapagdedesisyon dito.

“I believe the former President should be released. Her continued detention is a clear case of selective justice but her release should be upon orders of the court ordered her detention,” aniya.
