Bumiyahe ang mga delegado mula sa Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DoST-PCIEERD) sa Tsukuba City, ang Science City ng Japan, noong Martes para sa isang makasaysayang tagpo.
Ang mga DoST engineer ay nagsasaliksik, nagdebelop at bumuo ng unang microsatellite ng bansa, kasama ang mga kinatawan ng University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, isa sa mga pangunahing partner ng DoST sa Philippine Microsat Development Program. Ito ay isang milyahe, sinabi ni Dr. Carlos Primo David, executive director ng PCIEERD.
“Today is a momentous event as our very own microsatellite starts its long journey to space. Our scientists, together with their Japanese counterparts, have long been working hard on this project and we thank them for soon putting a piece of equipment bearing the Philippine flag to space,” sabi ni David.
Nilalayon ng PHL-MICROSAT Program na makabuo at makapaglunsad ng isang multi-spectral high resolution Earth Observation Microsatellite na may high precision telescope (HPT) at iba pang kaugnay na payload sa pamamagitan ng mga Filipino engineer at scientist sa pakikipagtulungan sa kanilang mga Japanese counterpart.

Ayon kay David, ang mga satellite ay inuri sa Femtosatellite, 10-100 g; Picosatellite, 1 kg o mas magaan; Nanosatellite, 1-10 kg; Microsatellite, 10-100 kg; at Small satellite, 100-500 kg.
Samantala, sinabi ni PCIEERD Deputy Executive Director Raul C. Sabularse na makakuha ng orbital slot para sa unang satellite na pag-aari nito sa napakaikling panahon sa tulong ng Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) at ng gobyerno ng Japan.
“We will have to wait for ours to be released in April,” aniya.
Ayon kay Sabularse, mauuna pa ang Pilipinas sa Japan sa paglulunsad ng isang 50-kg microsatellite.
“Ours will then be the first microsatellite in space,” sabi ng PCIEERD official.
Sa pagkakaroon ng microsatellite, makahahabol na ang Pilipinas sa mga katabi nito sa Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), ayon kay Sabularse. (EDD K. USMAN)
