Inindorso ni Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago ang negosyanteng si Manuel V. Pangilinan bilang kanyang presidential candidate sa May 2016 elections.

Sa kanyang talumpati sa mga empleyado ng Maynilad na pagaari ni Pangilinan, sinabi ni Santiago na magandang alternative candidate si Pangilinan dahil sa malaking kontribusyon nito sa paglago ng ekonomiya.

“What do you want for the Philippines in 2016? Why are we going to hold elections when there has been no improvement from those who were elected before?” tanong ni Santiago.

Nang linawin ng mga mamamahayag kung inieendorso na niya si Pangilinan sa pampanguluhan, walang pag-aalinlangan na tumango ang beteranong mambabatas.

Bukod sa Maynilad, ang mga kompanyang pag-aari ni MVP ay kinabibilangan ng Smart Communications, Philippine Long Distance Telecommunications (PLDT), Manila Electric Company, Metro Pacific at TV 5. “It should not be people from highly publicized career because their careers where they are the leading celebrities might blind them to the fact that their qualifications are sufficient for the job. I’m particularly talking about people from mass media, film and television,” dagdag ng senadora.

Una nang naghayag si Santiago ng kanyang intensiyon na tumakbo sa pagkapangulo sa 2016.

Nang tanungin kung ano ang mga kuwalipikasyon ng isang kandidato sa pagkapangulo na kanyang itinataguyod, sinabi ni Santiago na dapat na ito ay tapat, propesyunal at may magandang educational background.

“My qualifications are, number one, the president should be honest but that’s the most difficult qualification to determine because there’s no guaranteed test for honesty in public service. Second is professional excellence and the third is academic excellence,” pahayag ni Santiago. - Hannah L. Torregoza
