Disyembre 8, 1972, nang ilunsad ni noon ay President Ferdinand Marcos ang Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) sa ilalim ng Presidential Decree No. 78. Ang PAGASA ay katuwang ng Department of Science and Technology (DOST) sa “providing protection against natural calamities and utilize scientific knowledge as an effective instrument to ensure the safety, well-being, and economic security of all the people, and for the promotion of national progress.”

Nagbibigay impormasyon ang PAGASA tungkol sa kalagayan ng panahon, nagbibigay ng paalala, babala sa baha, malalaking alon at bagyo, at meteorological, climatological, at iba pang serbisyo at impormasyon. Ito ay binubuo ng mga organizational units, kabilang ang National Weather Service, National Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Information Service, National Institute of Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Sciences.
