Incheon (South Korea) (AFP)– Hinugot ng Qatar noong Miyerkules ang kanilang women’s basketball team mula sa Asian Games bago ang kanilang unang laban dahil sa isang patakaran na nagbabawal sa Muslim headscarves.

Tinuligsa ng Qatar at ng Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) ang isang patakaran ng International Basketball Federation (FIBA) na nagbabawal sa pagsusuot ng kahit anong headwear dahil sa safety grounds.

Ang Gulf state, na dapat ay uumpisahan ang kanilang kampanya laban sa Mongolia sa qualifying round sa Incheon noong Miyerkules, ay sinabi na ang patakaran ay taliwas sa Olympic principles tungkol sa diversity.

“FIBA didn’t let our players play with the headscarves and so we had to withdraw from the tournament,” pahayag ni Ahlam Al Mana, pinuno ng women’s sports committee ng Qatar.

“What happened today is against International Olympic Committee goals which are meant to include countries from different cultures, and also it’s against the slogan of the Asian Games in Incheon which is ‘Diversity Shines here.”

Sinabi ni Al Mana na alam ng Qatar ang tungkol sa ban, ngunit umasang mahihimok nila ang FIBA na magbago ng isip. Ang headwear ban ay na-relax na sa national level. Idinagdag niya ang mga koponan mula sa mga bansang apektado ng ban ay hindi na nagbiyahe papunta sa Games sa South Korea.

“I’m pretty sure that what happened today can change FIBA rules quickly,” ani Al Mana.

“Of course the OCA encouraged us to participate but this is a technical decision from FIBA. I hope in the near future they will allow us.”

Hindi nagbigay ng komento ang FIBA tungkol sa pangyayari, ngunit sinita ni OCA director general Husain Al-Musallam ang ruling laban sa pagsusuot ng hijab.

“The right of the athletes must be the highest priority,” lahad niya sa isang statement.

“Every athlete has the right to represent their country’s flag without discrimination or without the threat of a financial penalty.”

Ang football ay isa sa mga isport na pinapayagan ang pagsusuot ng head covering kasunod ng change of heart ng world body FIFA nitong taon.
