Itinanggi ni dating Philippine National Police (PNP) deputy chief for operations, Lt. Gen. Benjamin Santos, Jr. na nagkaroon ng cover-up sa ikinasang anti-drug operation na ikinasamsam ng 990 kilo ng shabu sa Maynila noong Oktubre 8, 2022.
Sa ipinatawag na press conference sa Camp Crame nitong Biyernes, ipinagtanggol ni Santos ang kanyang sarili at sinabing tinawagan lamang siya ni PNP chief, Gen. Rodolfo Azurin, Jr. upang magtungo sa lugar ng pinangyarihan ng operasyon kahit ipinagdiriwang nito ang ika-55 na kaarawan nito.
Pagdating aniya nito sa lugar, pinulong nito ang mga pulis at pinaalalahanan sila sa mga dapat na gagawin para sa inquest proceedings para nahuling illegal drugs alinsunod na rin sa chain of custody sa pag-iimbentaryo ng kumpiskadong ebidensya.
"I saw that thereis vaultwhere the drugs were kept. There are suitcases and sacks containing drugs. I checked this vault and I saw another small vault. I asked 'who opened the vault?'. Nobody responded. When I checked the small vault I saw the ID of (Master Sgt. Rodolfo) Mayo). I asked where he (Mayo) was," pahayag ni Santos.
Ayon kay Santos, kaagad niyang iniutos na arestuhin si Mayo at sampahan ng kaso.

"That is what I insisted. I really had no idea what transpired there. I was just there to congratulate our team because this is a big drug haul, to give them a pat on the back and to ensure that the operation went smoothly and that the cases that we will file will stand," pagdidiin ni Santos.
Nilinaw din niya na wala siyang kakayahang impluwensyahan ang imbestigasyon sa insidente dahil sinibak na rin siya sa puwesto.
"Songayon, hindi ko na alam sa totoo lang kung ako ay magli-leaveba o paanong gagawin ko sa akin," aniya.
Kamakailan, iniutos niDepartment of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin Abalos, Jr. sa mga opisyal ng pulisya na sangkot umano sa usapin na maghain ng leave of absence habang iniimbestigahan pa ang kaso.
Nitong Abril 10, isinapubliko ni Abalos angclosed-circuit television (CCTV) footage ng operasyon na sinasabing hindi tugma sa naging ulat ngPNP Drug Enforcement Group (PDEG).
“Relying only on the CCTV footage, with no due process or further consultations, Secretary Abalos, however well-meaning he may have been, implicated my name in the purported irregular buy-bust operation. I strongly deny any involvement in whatever impropriety or infraction of law or standard operating procedures if there are any in the alleged cover-up in the buy bust operation,” paglilinaw ni Santos.
